What Is Guest Blogging?

What Is Guest Blogging?

Interested in writing a blog post but don’t want to bother putting you your own blog? Or perhaps you already have a blog but would like to expand your scope? Guest blogging could very well be in your future.

The definition of Guest Blogging

As you may have guessed from the name, “guest blogging” essentially involves writing content for someone else’s blog. This has actually been done for several years now, although it was only in the past few years when it has become something of a standard practice in the online world.

The benefits of Guest Blogging

So why should you want to guest blog? And on the flipside of the coin, why should bloggers want your content posted on their site? There are actually a number of benefits to doing so for everyone concerned, with the most important being:

  • added exposure for you
  • fresh, new content for the host blog
  • new content for the readers
  • builds credibility
  • gain targeted traffic

Here’s how guest blogging breaks down:

If you have been blogging for awhile now, there is a good chance that you have reached the limit of your exposure, or are pretty close to reaching it. By guest blogging on other sites however, you could inject a much needed boost in your own site due to the added exposure that it will bring. If you find yourself losing your audience in droves, or simply want to benefit from added exposure, guest blogging might just be the ticket.

On the part of the host blog, its owner gains the benefit of fresh, new content without having to lift a finger. All bloggers struggle to churn out content at some point, and if you are able to deliver, you will be providing a valuable service.

Of course all this assumes that your content is up to scratch. Long time blogs with an established audience will have stringent criteria for guest posts, and they won’t just accept any content that comes along. Such sites will have a reputation to protect after all, and substandard content will likely damage that reputation regardless of how easy it is to get that content.

Readers of the host blog stand to benefit as well. If they have been following that particular blog for awhile, they will likely appreciate new content or even just a fresh approach. If your content is complementary to what they are accustomed to receiving, you may just win over some new followers for the host blog as well as your own.

Starting out guest blogging

Have you ever noticed how so many online issues and problems can be solved by doing a simple Google search? As it turns out, Google will help you get some good leads on blogs that you can post in as a guest. By using specific search parameters, you might even be able to track down some valuable niches that you wouldn’t have been able to dig up otherwise.

One of the most useful tools for guest blogging is My Blog Guest. This valuable tool can be quite effective at helping you find guest blogging openings in even the most specialized niches. If you want to cut through the chase and track down opportunities that you would have otherwise spent days to find, My Blog Guest is exactly what you need.

Finally, focus on building actual relationships. Far too many aspiring guest bloggers spend all their time and energies on establishing links. Sure you should work on building links for their benefits in terms of SEO, but forging relationships is just as important for guest blogging. By doing so, you will be able to get noticed by people who can actually help you within your niche.

This in turn will have significant impact in terms of building your network.  As with content posted on your own blog, you will have to consider quality, relevance, and value as well when you guest on someone else’s blog. In fact, you will probably have to up the ante a little, and make really sure that your content is top-notch.  After all, you will not only have to please your audience, but the blog owner and his audience as well.

So what do you think? Do you think that guest blogging is something you can work into your immediate future? Please do let me know your thoughts, and feel free to share some of your own experiences if you have already tried guest blogging yourself. I look forward to hearing from you!

I’d like to learn how to attract guest bloggers to our site at Windy Pinwheel. I have it listed at an option in our Advertise area of our site, but I am not familiar with going rates or what are potential options on trading space on one another’s blogs. This is good information.

Is “My Blog Guest” a WordPress plugin or is it a service found online somewhere? I intend to perform a Google search after I post this comment, but I thought I would ask anyway.

Great blog. Keep up the good work, Eric.

      Hey Will,

Great questions! What I have experienced its all about the relationship and building the relationship with other bloggers. Get your name, site, and the word out about your site. Also, you always want to help first and than benefit later. If you can help others by offering them a nice platform to blog on than it’s a no brainer to be able to attract others bloggers.

One thing for your specifically you have to keep thinking locally I believe. Maybe you should research and look for some of the best local bloggers around. That would be a great starting point to reach out and network through them. I know my city has several different local platforms.

      I hope this helps,

P.S. if you have any other questions feel free to ask me anything!

  3. Craft Buttons March 21, 2013 at 8:40 am #

I actually have a guest blogging offer on my site too. I run a craft buttons/materials site called Lots of Buttons. And we have two offers where we

    1) Ask people to be guest bloggers
    2) Ask people to submit their ideas to us for a reward.

But we haven’t had too many people catch on. Do you think it’s a demographic issue? Most of our customers are female and stay at home moms. Any tips and attracting more people to link backs and guest blogging?

I will definitely try this My guest blog plugin. Come by and check out our blog sometime. http://blog.lotsofbuttons.com.

      Hey Brian,

Thanks for comment and questions! Guest blogging is a very hot topic and it’s just a great way to really help get your name out there. There are a few sites out there that can help you contact bloggers looking to submit a guest blog post. I would suggest to mingle more with those sites that your trying to attract. There are so many stay at home, mother bloggers, and complete niche of female out there. Just take your time to research, connect, and reach out to those bloggers.

I would would start with just leaving a nice little comment just like this, than maybe check them out on social media, and lastly reach out to them.

Once you complete this with several if not many sites, I am sure something will be stir up!

      I hope this helps,

P.S. Great site, and if you ever need any help with any content look me up!

    Hey Erir,
I’m getting tons of guest post requests these days and some are from SEO consultant. I’d rather prefer working with fellow bloggers than with some SEO guy who got paid by his client.

I’m also charging for some guest post and that’s making some chunk of cash

Thanks for post buddy. I just shot you a mail ;)

ummnnn…good stuffs. People are generating good count of links on the name of guest posts. Actually, this has become a method of building links and they just name normal articles as guest posts but I do appreciate real guest posts.

Guest blogging is surely a great way to help newly created website to rank higher as well as provide direct traffic. People often like articles within 400 and 500 words. I always advice people to not focus on promoting their own business but on well covering the subject. Guest blogging can also help you gain new contacts which can help you in various tasks.

      Hey Allen,

Thanks for adding these points very nice and true facts. I really like the idea to focus on providing quality information over trying to promote anything.

      Thanks again,

Yes, me too :) . I think not everyone can be a blogger as it requires two things. Passion for something and ease with writing. I know people who wanted to begin but finally gave up as they couldn’t place their thoughts through keyboard. By the way. Wanted to mention that I like guest blogging a lot cause it brings back the feeling for internet as a friendly community. It’s nice to write something for someone and meet someone’s gratitude. The things like dofollow backlinks, self promotion or promotion of your business should always be on the second or further plan. Everything comes with time :)
